Broadband Speed - More is Less

By J Andrew Morrison

This is a short article intended to change how you evaluate broadband Internet services, particularly Cable vs. DSL. To put it simply, each time you double the speed of your Internet connection you get far less benefit in terms of performance. What this means to you when evaluating DSL vs Cable is you get far less bang for your buck in terms of how much time you save using the higher speed broadband Internet connection.

You might still be wondering how this can be. It seems simple enough, if you double your broadband Internet connection speed, you save twice as much time, right?

And thats true. But you need to remember saving twice as much time means you are cutting the amount of time it takes to download data in half. It is known as the law of diminishing returns, and with DSL vs Cable it hits you right in the pocket book.

In words it means as you double the speed and make those numbers larger, you cut the time saved to download a particular amount of data, say 1MB, in half. This means the amount of time you save with each doubling of speed is getting less and less. The best way to explain it is to show it and this graph shows just how quickly you start to lose value with increased broadband connection speeds.

So you can see from the graph there is a huge benefit in terms of time saved moving from dial up service to the lowest speed offered by DSL providers, what I call cheap DSL service, at 768Kbps. You also see that doubling that speed only saves you an additional 8 seconds, and doubling you speed again saves only an additional 1.5 seconds. I hope this short article has helped you realize that in the current market cable service is not worth the money.
