Is it possible to have two separate DSL connections on one phone line without a wireless router?

Can you answer michchick98’s question about DSL?:

I’m suddenly finding myself on a limited budget and was planning on moving in with my dad who has AT&T phone and internet (as I have currently). What I was wondering is if it would be possible to connect MY current DSL modem without a router and network card through his phone line so we both have two separate and distinct connections.

DSL Feedback: There are several ways to do this.

But first, your Dad must have DSL service. If so, why not just use your dad’s modem.

You can use what’s called Windows Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). Your dad’s PC is connected to the modem and then you connect to his computer with a crossover ethernet cable. Your connectio goes through his computer. The downside of this is that both PCs need to be powered on.

A better way though is with an ethernet hub or switch. You can pick these up pretty cheap, like around $10.

The best way is with a router, but you seem to rule that out due to cost, I assume. You may be able to pick up a used router, though. Check Craigslist.org .

DSL Feedback: It won’t be two separate connections, you would still be sharing the same last mile cable pairs. You would need to call the provider and have them engineer a new line to get two different services.

DSL Feedback: If your Dad is using DSL as well then no, you cannot have two DSL services provisioned onto one single phone line.
You would need to have two seperate phone lines to have two DSL services active.
If he is using Cable (sorry dont know what AT&T run) and there is a fully land line connected to the home you could run both but you would need your DSL service moved to the line.

As one of the above posters mentioned it would be easier to share his connetion via a switch than running two (and cheaper!)

*edit* Being as you are both on AT&T if your both on DSL your service would prabably work but you couldnt have both connected still.
I know over in Australia if a mate is on the same Provider – e.g. Internode, I can use my Router at his place and it will connect with my details – he only has a modem so we use my router when we LAN game. *edit*
