How come when I connect a router to my dsl modem, I lose connection to the internet?
Can you answer maxpowerrys's question about DSL?:
I have at&t dsl. My modem is a 2wire homeportal 1000hw. I want to connect a router to give internet to my bedroom and another room. The router is a linksys wireless g broadband router with 4 port switch model wrt54g. When I connect it, it works fine for about a day and then the "local network" light on my modem goes out and I cant use the internet until i disconnect the router and connect the modem directly to my computer. Please help!!

The problem may be with your router. Power off the router, wait until it gets cooler. Then power it again. Make sure that all ables are connected and they sure not break yet!!! Otherwise, you should buy a new one from Best Buy or Circuit City. Good Luck,
It looks to me like your 2wire IS a router. By attaching another router to it, you are probably getting conflicting IP addresses. It will work for a while, but once the leases are up on the IP addresses, things may go a little crazy.
Is there multiple ports on the back of your 2wire for additional devices? I could be wrong, but that device sounds like it works as a modem/router.
Please visit this site. It contains an answer… if it doesn't work, please repost some details and I would most probably be able to think of a solution.
Keep in mind that a DSL is nothing but a modem. What might be happening is your router and dsl are not working together synchronously. The DSL is usually pinging/requesting an IP from the server… when a router is connected to a dsl or cable, it will obtain that IP and it will do its thing in giving the ports individual ips (the PC's you are connecting).
One quick suggestion, if you do have a wireless router, I would suggest to initially connect to it through an ethernet cable. Once you establish a connection, change it to wireless.
One last tip, if it is a wireless router, remember to secure it.
cheers!
