Cable Internet?

Can you answer paperpenandtea’s question about DSL?:
I am a complete dunce when it comes to this stuff so let me lay it out here:
I use Netzero for my dial-up internet (yep, living in the stone age still!). I live in Canada. So, I want to upgrade and get cable internet.
My questions:
*Whom do I call to get the cable whatsits hooked up (I don’t even know what they do). I live in an apt building and the cable tv/net people who I see coming are from shaw. Also our local telephone company does internet too.
*Can I call either one of those even though I am not using their service for my cable internet?
