Can an external DSL modem experience signal breaks when located in proximity to large power sources?

Can you answer Rob’s question about DSL?:

In other words, if you have a PC with an external DSL modem, and on the opposite wall is the power box, or the A/C condenser, can these potentially cause breaks in the DSL signal? (e.g. loss of connection when the air kicks on, or when many electronic sources are running?)

Thanks.
